The Heart of the Matter

the ethos underlying Chem Chem

You make a difference. Every guest staying at either Chem Chem Lodge or Little Chem Chem contribute towards the community and conservation in the area.

Chem Chem Wildlife Concession was born out of Fabia Bausch and Nicolas Negre’s deep passion for Tanzania’s incredible natural heritage. Coupled with this love is an innate understanding of the area’s need for healthy, sustainable economic and social development, so they are delighted to contribute to local community development efforts through their foundation: LIVEWILDLIFE.

We are proud members of Pack for a Purpose, an initiative that allows travelers like you to make a lasting impact in the community at your travel destination. If you save just a few kilos of space in your suitcase and bring supplies for area schools or medical clinics in need, you'll make a priceless impact in the lives of our local children and families. Please click here to see what supplies are needed for our project/projects.

LIVEWILDLIFE’s aim is to protect this area’s natural environment by assisting the local communities in their efforts to safeguard the surrounding wildlife and, in the long run, to support the education system in cooperation with local communities, teachers and state officials. In consultation with the appropriate authorities, the foundation supports the state school infrastructure, offers courses for teachers and helps children to learn more about their local ecosystem through environmental education.

Fabia and Nicolas believe that supporting education and protecting wildlife forms a perfect symbiosis, where Tanzanians determine their own land use, while the local ecosystem, with its unique biodiversity, remains in balance. Their work is devoted to educating communities, especially children, towards a sustainable future. They also support the rangers who protect the wildlife of the concession.

2013 WILDLIFE CORRIDOR PROJECT: Chem Chem Wildlife Concession also works closely with the Wildlife Management Area to revive and protect the last existing wildlife corridor between Tarangire and Manyara National Parks. This is a hugely important project as the ever increasing impact of human settlements negatively effects the natural migration and movement of wildlife through the area. It involves working closely with, and providing work for, local villagers (especially women), as well as game warden training.
